MEDIAL PATELLAR LUXATION
MPL is a common joint abnormality in toy breeds that results in varying degrees of lameness . The patella ( knee cap) luxates. In simplier terms, the knee cap does not stay in it's normal position. It pops to the inside of the knee. The result is cartilage erosion and joint instability. Without treatment, there is a high incidence of cruciate injury.
Although complicated, the surgical correction has an excellent prognosis for complete recovery. The procedure involves reconstructing the joint anatomy. The groove ( trochlear groove) is modified so that the patella will not luxate. This technique involves removing a wedge-shaped portion of the trochlear groove with a bone saw, deepening the trough, and then inserting the wedge back into it's original place. The second stage in the repair involves moving a portion of the tibial crest to align the patella with the groove.
Patient recovery is usually complete in 2-4 weeks. For more information, contact our office.
